# Does adding more computers make an AI model run faster?

It can, but only with the right setup. With tensor parallelism over a fast, low-latency link, exo reports up to 1.8× speedup on 2 Macs and 3.2× on 4. Over a slow network, or with pipeline parallelism, extra machines add memory but not single-user speed.

Throughput for many users is a different question. More machines can serve more requests at once even when each single request is no faster.

Measured example: DeepSeek V3.1 (671B) ran at 21.1 tokens per second on one Mac Studio, 27.8 on two and 32.5 on four with exo and RDMA.

Gains shrink as you add devices because the machines spend more time communicating. Benchmark the model you plan to use on the topology you plan to buy.

**Where exo fits:** exo measures each device and link and picks the placement that should be fastest. Its exo-bench tool measures prompt and generation speed for every placement.
